When it’s about to happen, a warning message pops up, and the World Map and Minimap reveal the incoming impact area. Seconds later, Satellites scream down from orbit, unleashing destruction. These aren’t just cinematic setpieces; they are interactive threats. Multiple modules crash alongside the main Satellite, each one generating a deadly Blue Zone sphere. Standing inside that bubble saps 10 health per second and applies a freezing effect that slows and punishes. The Satellites themselves dish out lethal impact damage, so you never want to be beneath one. But risk and reward walk hand in hand here: the wrecks are filled with exclusive, high-value loot that you cannot find anywhere else. The developers explained their vision: “With the addition of a new Special Zone featuring crashing Satellites, we’ve expanded both the threats players face and the tools to counter them. Combined with intensified dynamic weather, these changes aim to heighten the tension of surviving in brutal cold.” Take it from me – hearing that orbital crash while your breath fogs the screen is a rush unlike any other.

Among the treasures you can scavenge from the Satellite debris is an entirely new throwable: the Frost Zone Bomb. It occupies a throwables slot, weighs 40, and can be deployed with a left-click. You can cancel the toss mid-animation, but be careful – damage, collisions, or sudden movement interrupt it. This device can be attached to most vehicles (yes, you can now drive a portable Blue Zone at your foes) and, once placed, it cannot be destroyed or defused. After a brief warning sound, it erupts into a Blue Zone sphere with a maximum radius of 20 meters. Inside, enemies suffer 14 damage per second and that same merciless freezing effect. It’s a game-changer for area denial, but remember: it only spawns from Satellites, so securing a crash site is essential.

To fight back against these arctic nightmares, the update introduces the Thermal Protection Suit. This rare piece of gear, also exclusive to Satellite loot, blocks a certain amount of Blue Zone damage when worn. Its appearance visibly degrades as durability drops, giving you and your enemies a clear read on how much protection remains. Even better, if you pair it with a Jammer Pack, the anti-Blue Zone effects stack cumulatively. For the first time, we can truly push the boundaries of what “staying outside the circle” means.

These features don’t live in isolation. Blizzards now sweep across Erangel much more frequently and intensely, affecting Normal, Ranked, and Custom Matches alike. The whiteout conditions reduce visibility, muffle audio, and make every step feel like a gamble. As I dropped in earlier this week, the combination of howling wind, distant Satellite warnings, and the constant shiver of low temperatures made my heart race. It’s a true survival experience.

Moving beyond Erangel, Rondo has received a significant item-spawn rebalance. After recent changes, the team felt the looting experience needed to match the pace of other 8x8 km maps. World spawn rates for weapons, attachments, and equipment have been adjusted upward, and Secret Rooms now hold increased throwables and gear. At the same time, the number of fixed Inflatable Boat spawn spots and total boats have been reduced, making coastal rotations a scarcer resource. It all feels smoother and more consistent.

Now for the change I’m personally most relieved about: the Secondary Password system. Long-requested by the community, this security layer is now live. When you enter the lobby, an account with this feature enabled will require a 6–8 digit PIN every 24 hours, or immediately if you log in from a different PC. SMS authentication is mandatory to set it up (even if you already verified for Ranked), and the same digit cannot repeat three times in a row. Five wrong attempts force a reset process. The old SMS verification for Ranked play has been completely replaced; now, every Ranked party member must have a secondary password enabled. If one player lacks it, the entire squad cannot queue for Ranked. The developers acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasised that this is meant to curb account theft and foster a safer competitive environment. If you forget your PIN, you can reset it, but full deactivation requires contacting Customer Support. Also, hitting 10 SMS attempts in a day locks you out of further verification for 24 hours.

Some other tasty additions: the Hunter’s Chest and Archivist’s Chest now feature new item sets. The Survivor Pass: Spirit Squad has dropped alongside the January Store Update, packed with fresh cosmetics and challenges. And quality-of-life tweaks keep rolling in – you can now salvage up to 60 weapon skins at once, up from 24, which makes inventory management much less of a chore.
